- I have two business's one is a Computer Consulting Company and the other is a Contracting Company. The first business I started in 1988 when computers were just beginning to become popular in small business. The small business's were being overlooked. I focused on that area, installing computers, transferring the accounts, etc from paper to computerized accounts and then teaching them how to use them, also taught basic accounting. As a small business owner in that type of business I fit the profile and was accepted . I viewed my business as a part time one and did not actively seek clients. I also found it difficult to charge the fees that were the rate at that time. ($75.00 ph) and would often charge a flat rate instead. My contracting business really was created out of need, My husband and I were hired to construct a house and had to hire people to assist us. I handled the finances and also worked as a carpenter. I had a difficult time convincing people that a WOMAN was capable and good at carpentry, and even when they realized I knew what I was doing, They did not want to pay me the wages that a man in the same job would get. a man $20. ph while they only wanted to pay me $14. ph. Although I handled billing, wages etc. We did not make what we should have. Again it is very hard to put a value on your time.
