Should I develop my idea as a non-profit or as a small business?

I originally had this idea for a Non-Profit organization that dealt specifically with education. I won't give out the details of it, but it was something that would be provided for, obviously, of no charge and something I've felt is greatly needed in my area. Upon studying non-profits, however, I learned that a Board must be developed. I'm afraid that if my idea is left up to a vote amongst others, there won't be a chance that my vision would come to light amidst differing opinions within the board. At the same time I want to start up a company that doesn't have a profit goal but is solely for the benefit of the community. The reason why this matters is because I want to make the organization eligible for as many grants as possible (due to the high cost that would be initially involved) So, to sum up, should I go non-profit or is there something else? What are my other options? Are there online resources for beginning entrepreneurs? And if at all possible, where can I get grants? I'm not "hiding" and never stated I was, I won't give details for two reasons; The details are not relevant to the context of the question being asked and; 2, there is not enough space for me to present all the ideas that would be worked on within the orgnization. At least not without making this question enormously large. If you're wanting to read a mission statement then feel free to e-mail me in regards to that. It would be possible to make a profit off the idea. Update - I was finally able to get hold of a lawyer and she recommended that for what I'm wanting to do I should either develop as an unincorporated non-profite (where I can remain in sole control and still qualify as non-profit, but with limitations) or go as small-business. I've decided to develop as a small business. I appreciate the help and answers.

  1. you need time to try more.........both....
  2. OK first of all if this is a non profit organization there is no need to hide your idea. If it is a good idea and helps with education then spread the word. (Unless someone could make a profit from it). Second find friends and family that can join your board. You’re not going to be right about what is good and bad all the time the help is good. Just make sure they are like minded. Third if you wont you can start a non profit with yourself filling in all the positions. I know it sounds strange and it will limit the grants but it can be done. I would stick with people you know and go for it. If they are like minded then even if they do out vote you on one or two small things then so what it’s probably for the best. Interview them first and let them know your ideas, hopes, and your dreams. Then they will let you know their opinions and that would tell you if you’re on the same page or not. Best of luck.
