Teen Small Business?

This summer, I'd like to earn a little extra cash, and I was thinking of starting a small business making and decorating cakes and goodies for all occasions. I'm not aiming super high, probably just on referrals and not all across town. My parents are all for it, and they might back me up with some start up money. But I'm only 13, so does anyone have any tips for a budding entrepreneur? Thanks! =)

  1. yes, consider making some samples and taking them to local convenience stores, sandwhich shops, etc. Let the owner try your goodies and see if they will sell them for you. If they will, figure how much it will cost you to make them, and then establish a cost to sell them for. Good luck! It's a great idea and I hope you are successful!
  2. I would set up stands (if the buisness allows) and give out free samples of your products and than if they like it give them a flyer. Keep doing this and sooner or later you are going to have alot of customers!!
  3. Send me some cookies and cakes and I'll let you know how they are... (j/k) Seriously, giving away some samples will be your best bet. Start by giving away some cakes and goodies with your business card or flyer attached. Give away to friends and family first. Neighbors too. Print up some professional-looking flyers and pass the out all over your neighborhood. Put them on bulletin boards at supermarkets, etc. Run ads on Craiglist in your area. Maybe contact a reporter at your local paper and ask them to do a story on a "13-year old entrepreneur" they love that stuff -- in fact, send the local newspaper a tray of cakes and goodies. (Works every time.) Visit a few retail shops and ask to display your stuff on consignment (they take orders and split with you.) Read a book like Guerrilla Marketing for more low-cost tips.
  4. Sell your goods to people close to you first. Then ask them to help you advertise your products. Or maybe during family occasions where there are a lot of people, that would be a good chance of advertising and marketing. Give out samples. Who knows, you'll get orders by then.
