marketing?

Can someone give a simple explanation of what marketing (business field) means? If a person has a marketing job for a clothing company, what would that person be doing? and what might be a better field to major in, marketing or management

  1. This depends on what type of marketing job that person has. But in a nutshell, if a person has a marketing job for a clothing company, they would most likely be involved with developing a promotion, public relations, branding, and positioning strategy. They would not only have to market that clothing company to potential customers, but also to potential wholesale buyers of their clothing (e.g. Macy's, Nordstrom, etc.). Regarding which major to choose, whether you major in marketing or management depends on what you'd like to be doing with your degree. If you see yourself handling and being responsible for a team of individuals or departments, then management's for you. If you can juggle different personalities, are diplomatic, and understand people's motivations as well as their limitations, then management's for you. However if you consider yourself more of a free spirit, then marketing can be more for you. Many marketers enjoy somewhat liberal hours as well as plenty of business-related travel. The marketing field deals basically with the psychology of the consumer. Ever marketer has to understand what motivates a consumer to buy and has to develop strategies based on that understanding. Marketers develop promotional strategies that are creative, tried and true, and innovative. As they progress throughout their career (whether they're an ad exec, a marketing consultant, or a public relations manager), they can become upper management material as they would have developed an understanding in the processes and roles of their subordinates. Hope this helps.
