Marketing...?

Can anyone tell me what exactly a marketing department does? I work in a freight forwarding company and I would be interested in starting this king of department. What would it have to do, what would it be in charge with?

1. It all depends on the actual company itself. Some places outsource some places do it all. The basic answer is that a marketing department is there is paint a positive yet unforgettable view of the company in the public eye. So whether it is making sure all of the sales staffs materials are properly branded with the logo and colors or writing press releases on some event taking place in the org...it is all about getting the company's name out there.
